Saint Gaudens MS61 Gold Coin
The $20 Saint Gaudens gold coin has a design of Lady Liberty who is holding the torch of freedom in one hand and an olive branch in the other with the word "LIBERTY" above. The Liberty Goddess has been popular thru out many cultures and has come to represent the symbol of democracy. The olive branch derived from the customs of ancient Greece symbolizes peace or goodwill. On the reverse of the coin is the nations gold eagle that flies over the sun.
$20 St. Gaudens History
The $20 Saint Gaudens gold coin has a fascinating and rich history as this coin was first minted in the year 1907 to replace the $20 Liberty gold coin. The St Gaudens coin was first minted along with the Indian head gold coins in three different locations in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. They had the P, D, and S symbols after the date of mint in the coin to represent the place in which they were minted. Production ceased in 1933 and most the coins were melted down as a result of the great depression.
The St Gaudens, also called a double eagle gold coin, received its name after the great American sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens who designed it. The obverse design of Lady Liberty was brought back in 1986 to represent US minted coin bullion in the form of the American gold eagle coins and is also popular among gold proof coins available in gold proof american eagles.
