$5 Liberty Head MS62

The $5 Liberty Head coin has Lady Liberty on the obverse side and American bald eagle on the reverse side. It bears the recognized symbols and information of that era to include the words "United States of America", the denomination, the date on which it was minted and the word "Liberty" on top of the Goddess image.

History

The newly opened Philadelphia mint started minting currency for the US government and was assigned the Liberty Head coins. The first two coins which were produced in the Philadelphia Mint were $5 and $10 coins. After much discussion and debate the design and denominations were set and the Liberty Head coins where in production from 1839 to 1908. They were minted for the purpose of common currency and the consumption of these were very high.  At that time there was only one mint which was minting all the coins.  To give response to the heavy demand The US government decided to open more mints. Six other mints were opened and all these US mints produced $5 Liberty Head coins. All the mints had put their mark on the coin as the first letter of their mint. The Philadelphia mint never put any mark as it was the first mint.

Value & Demand

The $5 Liberty Head coin was been minted for decades producing millions in quantity.  When US the government decided to stop using gold currency, it asked the citizen to return all the coins and gold to the government.  Due to this reason most of the $5 pieces were taken back and melted in the US mint.  The number of gold coins which remain today have become collectors items for those who buy gold and the increase for demand remains high due to availability to have one of each coin to include the $2.5 Liberty Head, $5 Liberty Head, $10 Liberty Head and the popular $20 Liberty Head. After 1908 the design of this was changed to the Indian Head. The only mint not to produce this gold piece is West Point Mint only because it opened in 1984, which is 75 years after production of the  $5 Liberty Head.
